My daughter, Jordanne, has taught me many things. Perhaps her approach to life has influenced me the most. It used to be when I went for a drive I was only concerned with the destination. Part of it was due to severe motion sickness. As a child (and well into adulthood) if I was a passenger, the only way to avoid extreme misery was to take Dramamine and sleep through the trip. I just want to get there! When I was in high school, I took a road trip with my grandparents from Southern Oregon to Idaho and missed the entire journey.
Thankfully the severity of motion sickness has improved. But the mentality remains. I just want to get there! I focus on getting from Point A to Point B without noticing much in between. My task-oriented self adds to the dynamic. The road has my full attention. Roadblocks and detours are my enemies, and frustrate my world.
It’s fun traveling with Jordanne though. She notices the beauty around her. She marvels at the cloud formations. She studies the landscape and points out what she sees. She observes textures and colors and intricate details. I have the joy of experiencing the journey from her perspective. Even though I am the driver, I feel that I am the one who is along for the ride.
Jordanne isn’t focused on the destination. In fact, she often doesn’t know where we are going. But that doesn’t faze her. We’ll get there when we get there. In the meantime, she’s on the lookout for the divine.
The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world (Psalm 19:1-4, NLT).
Thanks to Jordanne, my driving habits are changing. I travel the same road day after day on my 45 minute commute, but it’s rarely the same trip. I’m learning to appreciate the handiwork of God expressed in the changing seasons. Truly I am the one who is along for the ride.
This is also true when it comes to pursuing dreams and setting goals. The Lord knows exactly what is going on within my life and family. The situations with the organization in which I serve are not hidden from His view. My heavenly Father is in control. I am along for the ride. I will see and hear His glory when I look up from the road.
What about you? Are you so focused on the roadblocks or detours to your intended destination that you have lost sight of the glory of God? What challenge are you facing at home? On the job? In relationships? Remember that His Presence is always with you.
In the middle of problems, take time to pause. Lift your gaze from the circumstances and look for God’s glorious presence. Pay attention to His fingerprints all around you. Listen carefully for His message. God is near. Trust that He is in control, and appreciate the beauty in your midst.
Heavenly Father, I praise You as Creator of the entire Universe. Thank You that You also love and care deeply for me and every detail of my life. Nothing escapes your view. Help me rise above my goals and desires, and see Your glorious Presence. Let faith and encouragement grow in my heart. In Jesus’ name.
